Generate a coordinate grid

Pattern must include {value}. Optional tokens: {axis} and {unit}. X increases to the right and Y increases downwards from the top-left corner.

This creates a separate, scalable SVG overlay. It does not open or modify a PDF and does not establish survey or world coordinates. The unit you choose is used only in the labels; the SVG has no fixed print size. The DXF uses that unit as its drawing unit, so a 10 mm spacing is 10 drawing units in a file that declares millimetres, with minor lines, major lines, labels and the frame on the layers XM-GRID-MINOR, XM-GRID-MAJOR, XM-GRID-LABEL and XM-GRID-BORDER.

Save your download before you leave the page — it exists only in this tab.

How do I create a coordinate grid overlay?

  1. Enter the grid width and height, then place the origin inside them. X increases to the right and Y increases downwards.

  2. Set the X and Y spacing, coordinate unit, line or point style, major every and a label pattern containing {value}.

  3. Generate and review the preview, then download the SVG or the DXF and place it in your drawing or CAD software.

How is the grid laid out?

This grid overlay generator makes a labelled line or dot grid, measured from an origin you choose, as an SVG to lay over a drawing or a DXF to bring into CAD. Choose lines or dots, the spacing on each axis and how often a line is labelled.

The generator places grid lines or points at even spacing on both sides of the origin you choose. Labels show the signed offset from that origin, in the unit and wording you set. The SVG has no fixed print size: its numbers describe proportions only, not survey or GPS coordinates, so scale it to your sheet when you place it. The DXF uses the unit you choose as its drawing unit, so a 10 mm spacing is 10 drawing units in a file that declares millimetres.

How Xenmark makes it easy to create a coordinate grid overlay

  • Lines or points from your own origin

Set the grid’s width and height, place the origin anywhere inside it, and choose the spacing on each axis. The SVG has no fixed print size and uses your unit only in its labels; the DXF is drawn full size in that unit.

  • Nothing you enter leaves this tab

What you type is held and worked on in this tab only. There is no upload, no account and no server for it to go to.

  • Labels worded the way you want

A label pattern using the axis, value and unit tokens sets the wording of every label, and each value is the signed offset from your origin.

  • Major lines at the interval you pick

Make every line, or every point, major from every second up to every twentieth. Major lines, or major points, are drawn heavier, and only major positions are labelled.

  • Oversized grids stopped before drawing

More than 200 positions on an axis, 2,500 points or 200 labels is refused with a reason, rather than producing a file too dense to use.

  • Nothing to install

It runs in the browser you already have. There is no plug-in, no desktop application and no sign-up to get through first.

Limitations

What this tool does not do, stated up front.

  • The result is a separate SVG or DXF. It does not add the grid to a PDF; you place the file in your drawing, CAD or PDF software yourself.

  • Coordinates run with X to the right and Y downwards from the top-left corner, and the DXF labels count the same way even though CAD's own Y axis points up; they are not survey, geographic, building-model or drawing-world coordinates.

  • Resizing, stretching or positioning the SVG incorrectly changes its alignment. Excessive line, point and label counts are refused.

Questions

Is a drawing uploaded?

No. This tool does not take a file. What you type and the files it makes stay in this tab until you reset or leave the page.

What size is the downloaded grid?

The SVG has no fixed print size: the width and height you enter set its proportions, and you scale it to your sheet when you place it. The DXF is drawn full size in the unit you choose.

Can this add the grid directly to a PDF?

No. It produces a separate SVG or DXF, which you place in your drawing, CAD or PDF software yourself.

Why did Xenmark build a free grid generator?

Xenmark AS is a Norwegian software company building browser-based drawing review tools for owners, consultants, operators and other teams that receive and review technical drawings. Those teams work with drawing numbers, revisions and client details that are not always meant to leave the office. So these everyday tools are free and run entirely in your browser: no account, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. You can check that yourself — open your browser’s network tab, generate a grid, and watch nothing leave. What this tool cannot do is listed under Limitations above.

Beyond the free tools

Reviewing the drawings, not just handling the files?

Xenmark is affordable PDF markup and structured drawing review in the browser. Invite reviewers, pin numbered comments on the sheet, track every one by author and status, and export a clean PDF and Excel when the review is done. Unlike these tools, a review is shared, so its drawings are uploaded to your Xenmark project.

Free forever plan. Reviewers you invite never pay.
