Calculate a dimension at scale

Calculate

How do I convert a drawing length to a real length?

  1. Enter the drawing-to-real ratio, such as 1:50, and the length you want to convert.

  2. Choose the input and output units, then select Drawing length to real length or Real length to drawing length.

  3. Select Calculate and check the result against an authoritative dimension before relying on it.

How is a drawing scale calculated?

This drawing scale calculator converts a length measured on a drawing into its real dimension, or works out how long a real dimension should be drawn.

At 1:50, each millimetre on a correctly sized drawing represents 50 millimetres in reality. For example, a 5 m wall is drawn 100 mm long. Reversing the calculation tells you how much space a real dimension occupies on the drawing.

How Xenmark makes it easy to calculate drawing scale

  • Drawing to real, or back again

Turn a length measured on the drawing into its real dimension, or work out how long a real dimension should be drawn. One switch changes the direction.

  • Nothing you enter leaves this tab

What you type is held and worked on in this tab only. There is no upload, no account and no server for it to go to.

  • Mixed units in one calculation

Enter the length in millimetres and read the answer in metres, or the other way round. Input and output units are chosen separately from mm, cm, m, in and ft.

  • Enlargement ratios as well as reductions

Any positive drawing:real ratio is accepted, so a 2:1 detail works as readily as a 1:500 site plan. Decimal terms such as 1:12.5 are read as well.

  • Bad input is refused, not guessed

A malformed ratio, a zero or a negative length stops the calculation with a plain message, rather than producing a number you might trust by mistake.

  • Nothing to install

It runs in the browser you already have. There is no plug-in, no desktop application and no sign-up to get through first.

Limitations

What this tool does not do, stated up front.

  • A stated ratio cannot confirm that a print, scan or screen view is at the correct physical scale.

  • Results depend on the scale ratio, measured length and units you enter.

  • The calculator does not read a drawing or replace calibration against a known dimension.

Questions

What does a scale of 1:50 mean?

One unit on the drawing represents fifty of the same units in reality. For example, 10 mm on the drawing represents 500 mm in reality.

How does a scale calculator work out the real size from a drawing?

Multiply the measured length by the second number of the ratio and divide by the first: at 1:50, 180 mm on the drawing is 180 × 50 = 9,000 mm, or 9 m, in reality.

Why might a measurement disagree with the written drawing dimension?

Printing, scanning or screen zoom may have changed the displayed size. Check a known reference dimension and use the authoritative drawing dimension where available.

Why did Xenmark build a free drawing scale calculator?

Xenmark AS is a Norwegian software company building browser-based drawing review tools for owners, consultants, operators and other teams that receive and review technical drawings. Those teams work with drawing numbers, revisions and client details that are not always meant to leave the office. So these everyday tools are free and run entirely in your browser: no account, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere. You can check that yourself — open your browser’s network tab, work out a scaled length, and watch nothing leave. What this tool cannot do is listed under Limitations above.

Beyond the free tools

Reviewing the drawings, not just handling the files?

Xenmark is affordable PDF markup and structured drawing review in the browser. Invite reviewers, pin numbered comments on the sheet, track every one by author and status, and export a clean PDF and Excel when the review is done. Unlike these tools, a review is shared, so its drawings are uploaded to your Xenmark project.

Free forever plan. Reviewers you invite never pay.
