How do I extract images from a PDF?
Drop a PDF of up to 64 MiB onto the tool, or choose one. The images it finds are listed with their stored pixel size.
Download the ones you want. Each file is named after the image's internal number in the PDF (for example image-012.jpg, or mask-013.png for a transparency mask), so no two names clash, and the ZIP uses the same names.
Read the refusals if any appear: those are formats that cannot be handed over as a file an ordinary application opens.
Why are extracted images better than screenshots?
Extract images from a PDF: the photographs and scans come out as proper image files, at the resolution they are stored at, which helps when a site photograph is buried in a report. JPEGs come out byte for byte as they are stored in the PDF, with nothing decoded or re-encoded, so this is not a screenshot.
A PDF does not store a picture of a picture. Most software stores a placed JPEG as the JPEG data itself, and stores other images as their pixels with lossless compression, so recovering them is copying, not converting. JPEGs are handed over exactly as they are stored in the PDF, with nothing decoded or re-encoded; whether that matches the photo first placed depends on the software that made the PDF, as some recompress images. Other images are saved as PNG, which is also lossless, pixel for pixel, although a colour profile attached to an RGB or grey image is not copied into the PNG. Black-and-white scans stored with Group 4 fax compression are saved as TIFF files around the same data. What comes out is the stored image, which may not match what the page looks like: an image held at four thousand pixels may be placed in a fifty-millimetre box on the sheet, and it is the stored version you receive. Formats that would produce a file most applications cannot open, and colours that would need the document's own colour profile to convert correctly, are refused by name with the reason rather than written out wrongly.

Limitations
What this tool does not do, stated up front.
Some software slices one large scan into horizontal strips before embedding it, so what looked like one drawing may come out as several pieces. Pages holding several images are flagged for this reason.
Transparency is stored as a separate image, and both parts are offered, each labelled in the list, rather than combined into one file. The PDF can be up to 64 MiB, and an image over 80 million pixels is refused.
Encrypted PDFs, including ones that open without a password, are refused. So are JPEG 2000, JBIG2 and CMYK images stored without JPEG compression; a CMYK JPEG is handed over as stored, though some viewers show such files with inverted colours.
Questions
Are images extracted from a PDF without losing quality?
Yes. JPEGs are copied out exactly as stored in the PDF, and other images are pixel-for-pixel identical to what the PDF holds. Nothing is screenshotted.
Does it find every image in the PDF?
Not always. Pictures placed on pages in the usual way are found, but small images written directly into the page content and images inside comments or stamps are not listed, and a document with more than 2,000 images is listed only up to that number.
Why was an image refused?
Usually because handing it over would give a file most applications cannot open, or a picture with wrong colours; an image over 80 million pixels or with damaged data is refused too. The reason is shown against each one.
