How do I add bookmarks to a PDF drawing set?
Drop a PDF onto the tool, or choose one. One row appears per page, pre-filled with a placeholder title.
Type the real sheet name against each page. Clear a title to give that page no bookmark.
Indent rows to nest them under the row above, then select Add bookmarks and save the result. A row can be at most one level deeper than the row above it.
How do PDF bookmarks work?
This tool adds bookmarks to a PDF drawing set: a clickable list of sheets that lets a large set be navigated instead of scrolled. Name each sheet, indent rows to group them by discipline, and save a new file.
A bookmark is an entry in the PDF’s outline, which a viewer shows as a side panel of clickable links. Without one, a two-hundred-sheet issue can only be navigated by scrolling or by guessing page numbers. Two decisions in how these are written are worth knowing about. Each bookmark points directly at its page rather than through a named destination, because a name is an extra indirection that survives later editing while its target may not, which is how a bookmark comes to point at nothing. And each one opens its page fitted to the window rather than at a stored position and zoom, because a saved zoom sends the reader to the right sheet showing the wrong part of it. Anything already in the document is replaced rather than merged, since two trees written against different assumptions about page order produce a panel that looks correct and navigates wrongly. A bookmarked set is also easier for reviewers to work through in any PDF viewer.

Limitations
What this tool does not do, stated up front.
Titles are typed rather than read from the drawings. Reading a sheet name out of a title block is a separate job, and guessing it wrongly would be worse than asking.
Bookmarks already in the document are replaced, not added to, and the file is rewritten, so any digital signature on it will no longer validate.
The editor takes PDFs up to 64 MiB and five hundred pages. A longer document is refused, because one row per page stops being usable beyond that.
Questions
Can it read the sheet names from the drawings automatically?
No. The sheet number usually sits inside the title block as graphics or as text in an unpredictable position, and a wrong guess would put the wrong name against the wrong sheet. Type each sheet's name against its page instead; it takes a minute for a set and is right the first time.
What happens to bookmarks that are already there?
They are replaced. Merging an existing tree with a new one cannot be done safely, because the old destinations were written against assumptions about the document that may no longer hold.
